Strong leadership abounds on Highland girls basketball
Highland girls basketball has had a tough few seasons and as the Rams approach region play, it’s going to be a long road for the team. But coaching changes this season and a new approach to Highland’s program has already seen some changes. Senior captain Austin Fawson has been one of the players that have been helping to change the attitude of the players, said new head coach Jeremy Chatterton.
“Austin is an amazing student athlete and has really stepped up as a leader for this team,” he said. “She carries a 4.0 GPA and is a great example on and off the court for her teammates.”
Chatterton said with the coaching changes and the past few seasons, Highland could have easily fallen into a slump. But Fawson has stepped in to do her part in making sure the season ends on a high note.
Fawson started playing basketball as a freshman. She said she’s always viewed basketball as a way to relieve stress. As one of the captains this year, she said her role as a leader on the court has been more difficult, mainly due to the coaching changes.
“Our entire team had to start fresh this year,” she said. “But we’re working together and everything is starting to fall into place.”
Leadership on the court is going to be one of Highland’s most critical aspects that can lead to success or failure. Working alongside the coaches, Fawson helps her team determine where players will do the most good.
“We have an obligation as seniors and captains to motivate our team,” she said. “It’s tough when the team doesn’t have a lot of wins but we’re not quitting.”
Chatterton said in addition to being physically tough, Fawson is also very smart when it comes to the game. Fawson is averaging just over five points per game and is one of the top three scorers for the Rams.
Despite a valiant effort by Fawson and the other starters, the Rams have only one win under their belts going into region play. Although there is little hope this team will make it to the playoffs, that hasn’t stopped the girls from playing as hard as they can.
“We’re not going to be satisfied with just one win,” Fawson said. “If we can continue to put forth a strong effort and as long as we want the win, we will be successful.”
