Leadership on the court helps Highland boys basketball succeed
Being a good leader and a good basketball player isn’t necessarily the same thing. But Highland senior captain Max Bradshaw possesses both qualities and has been a major force in keeping this team motivated. The Rams have entered into region play with mostly wins under their belt. Coach Keith West attributes this team’s positive attitude in part to Bradshaw.
“Max is a great player because he leads by example,” he said. “He puts a great amount of effort into the game, whether its offense or defense. He never gives up -- it’s the only way he knows how to play.”
Bradshaw was injured early in the season and has been working to get back to playing. The beginning of a stress fracture in his foot confined Bradshaw to the bench but that didn’t stop him from working hard to motivate his team.
“I try to help keep the team working hard, even when I can’t play,” Bradshaw said. “No one likes to be benched because of an injury. But it’s a good opportunity to give other players a chance to get some time on the court, which is good for the team.”
Athletics comes easily to Bradshaw, who also plays baseball for Highland. He said he loves every aspect of the game -- the mental and physical. Where baseball is more of a mental game, Bradshaw said he especially loves the physical aspect of basketball, and being able to push himself harder.
Highland basketball is working to defend last year’s state title. Bradshaw said he tries to make sure everyone is having a good time and remembers what they are playing for.
“There can be a real struggle to remember why we are on the court and what we’re playing for,” he said. “I feel confident that this team is as good as last year’s team. If we step up, we could lead this team to another state title.”
Now back to 100 percent, Bradshaw is working hard to keep his team doing well. The Rams are currently sitting at third in region after the preseason. Bradshaw said Highland has used the preseason to learn the strengths the team has. The Rams are building on these strengths as region play started on Jan. 13 with an easy win against Cyprus, SCORE.
“The key to a winning team is having great leadership,” he said. “I’m not the most talented guy out there but I know what my role is and that’s to be a leader and keep my team doing well.”
