Charlie Luke to represent Sugar House on Salt Lake City Council
New Year brings new representation for residents
On Jan. 3, Charlie Luke was sworn in as the newly elected Salt Lake City Councilmember representing District 6, an area that includes the heart of the Sugar House shopping district.
In November, local residents elected Luke to serve a four-year term. Luke will serve both as a member and as the Salt Lake City Council Vice Chair.
Luke said he was inspired to run for elected office, in part, because he wanted to encourage Sugar House residents to get involved with the local government process in their community.
“I have spent most of my business career trying to increase public involvement,” Luke said.
Luke is currently a resident of Sugar House, where he lives with his wife and children in a house on the same street where he visited both sets of his grandparents when he was a child.
He grew up in Cottonwood Heights and graduated from the University of Utah with a degree in Political Science. After graduation, Luke founded a business that lobbies legislators.
When asked about his goals for his upcoming term on the council, Luke said he would focus on supporting local businesses and encouraging responsible development in the Sugar House business district.
Luke also said he would work to ensure that quality services are provided to residents.
During his campaign, Luke said he would encourage development of a police precinct located closer to the Sugar House area.
Currently, police officers serving local residents and businesses must respond from a building west of State Street.
“That’s one of the municipal services [for residents] we need to look at,” Luke said.
Regarding the Sugar House streetcar line, a public transportation project planned for the local historic rail corridor along 2100 South, Luke said he would support the project and hoped to see the proposed route extended further east.
“District 6 is terribly underserved by mass transit, and that would be of great benefit to residents,” he said.
Luke points out that council leadership are now both representatives of the Sugar House area. Salt Lake City Council member Simon Sorenson, elected as the council chairperson, represents District 7. Luke was elected the council vice-chair shortly after he was sworn into office.
