Highland girls seeking breakthrough victory
One victory doesn’t make a season, but when a team has been chasing that elusive win for three seasons, it can’t help but be starving for success.
Highland High’s girls basketball team, mired in a 24-game losing streak spanning three seasons as of press deadline, hopes to find that piece of success soon. The Rams opened the season with consecutive losses to Tooele (57-35), Northridge (37-29) and Box Elder (63-35).
Highland finished 0-20 overall and 0-12 in Region 6 last season, finishing with the second-worst average point differential in the state (23) next to Uintah. Just one season before, the Rams went 12-9 overall and lost in the first round of the playoffs to Sky View. Leading scorer Joana Borceguin (eight points per game) has graduated, while Lusia Tuakalau (8) is also not back this season.
Austin Fawson led the Rams in scoring against Tooele with 11 points. Stephanie Kaufusi had nine points and Rachel Vite seven for Highland, which trailed, 34-14, at halftime. The Rams were held scoreless in the second quarter after trailing, 21-14, after the first quarter.
Fawson netted 10 points against Northridge, while Kaufusi and Maryann Koeven had five points apiece. The Knights led, 25-14, at halftime, holding Highland to nine points or less each quarter.
The Rams never got on track until it was too late against Box Elder, trailing, 36-9, at halftime. Kaufusi had 11 points, Vite nine, Tatiana Faumui five and Lily Huntsman four.
Highland was scheduled to play at Kearns on Dec. 6 and host Olympus on Dec. 13.
