Santa Claus spotted in Sugar House
Santa Claus has come to town and taken up residence at the Santa Shack, at 1100 East and 2100 South. For $20, children of all ages can come have their picture taken with him.
Professional photographer Laurie Bray takes the pictures. There’s a photo booth across the street where the individuals can drink hot cocoa and wait for their pictures to develop.
This year, customers can also purchase an ornament displaying the photo of them and Santa. “He is the best Santa because he really visits with kids. It’s not an assembly line,” Bray said.
About 75 years ago, the Santa Shack started out as a hexagon shaped building, labeled Santa’s House. Children could go inside and sit with Santa in an intimate setting. The location of the shack and the building itself has changed, but the tradition remains.
The merchants are still invested in the Santa Shack. “We provide the lights on the trees and the lights all around,” Sterling Furniture employee, Debbie Williamson said.
In addition to getting a picture with Santa, there are a few residents who add their own spin to the tradition. There’s one family who has been coming to the shack for several years dressed in costumes. “Last year they were dressed up as different countries. I can’t wait to see what they’ll dress up as this year,” Bray said.
Another lady comes to the shack each year with a gift for Santa. Past gifts include knitted potholders, a scarf, and candle holders.
The shack is open Monday through Thursday, from 3 to 7 p.m. On Fridays, the shack opens at the same time, but closes an hour later at 8 p.m. The hours on Saturday are from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Santa will be at the shack until Dec. 23.
